Patient has a large silver amalgam which over time shows wear and
breakdown. Older conventional techniques would dictate a crown for this tooth due to the
current size of the filling.
We restored the tooth using an inlay system which utilizes a highly
condensed resin (Concept) prepared by a laboratory and then is "bonded" to the
remaining tooth. This method conserves tooth structure (as opposed to crowning) and
because it is "bonded", it actually restores strength to a tooth which had
considerable breakdown.
The AirDent II air abrasion unit uses silica particles under high pressure in order to
remove decay. In most cases no hand pieces (drills) or anesthetic (shot) is needed.
And almost all insurance companies will cover this benefit.
This 68 y.o. patient had two complaints: 1) her front four teeth did not
match the teeth around them and 2) the lower front teeth showed considerable wear and
appeared like "stumps".
The four crowns on top had been done some 30 years ago and probably
matched at that time fairly well. Unfortunately the relative size of these four crowns
caused excessive wear on her opposing teeth (lower teeth) reducing the size of them down
to almost nothing.
We restored both the upper teeth and the lower teeth using an all
porcelain system (Empress) which allows us to give her the strength of porcelain and metal
crowns BUT gives her the beauty and translucence of a natural tooth. Needless to say, she
was estatic with the final results.
The older amalgam (silver) filling which show considerable wear. Tooth on
left restored with all-porcelain (Empress II) crown. Tooth on right restored with
tooth-colored (composite) fillings.
